Part One – Registering a Domain Name
Estimated Time Required: 15-20 Minutes
Choosing and registering a domain name is the first step in building your website. Try to pick a domain name that is an exact match to your business name if possible. Be sure to have a few other choices in case yours is taken.
We suggest using NameCheap to register your domain. There are many other companies that you can use to register your domain as well. The average cost for a dot-com domain ranges from $8.00 – $12.00 per year. You can expect to pay more for a premium domain that someone else already registered and is now reselling.
Your domain name is your address. It tells your visitors how to view your website. Your domain name must be combined with a hosting company or server where the website actually lives. In our example, we are using Wealthy Affiliate as the hosting company for the website we are building.
Things To Remember:
- You cannot change your domain name once it’s registered, if you make a mistake you will have to buy a new one.
- Be careful if your name is similar to another well-established domain.
- Try to avoid long domain names that will be hard for people to remember.
When you register your domain name, you must provide your up to date contact information per ICANN regulations. Information about who is responsible for a domain is important for quick resolution of any legal or technical issues.
